Three Earn Black Belts

Three candidates became “Sensei” at a February 4, 2006, testing. Micheal West, Josh Jennings, and David Kain earned a Shodan, or 1st Degree Black Belt, in MSC Kickboxing, as well as the title of Sensei, at this evaluation.
The test consisted of three sections – cognitive, psychomotor, and affective. Initially, the candidates were quizzed orally over their knowledge of martial arts worldwide, as well as the history of the MSC (Michael Scott Carlson) Kickboxing style. Next, the candidates performed the six required katas of the style and demonstrated kickboxing combinations that would work well for themselves.
In the next section, the candidates had a 20 minute cardio-muscular evaluation. They performed wall kicks, push-ups, and shadowed sparred to warm up. Then, they individually fought three black belts for five minutes each, nonstop. One half each of the sparring section was Full Contact Rules and International Rules kickboxing. The sparring was full contact, indeed. While the candidates where not sparring, they were drilled on calisthenics and kickboxing techniques, again, nonstop.
Finally, the candidates discussed community service and personality attributes that Black Belts should possess.
Evaluators included: Sensei Russell Lane, Sensei Shaun Gay, Sensei Robert Englemann, Sensei Hardy Solomon, Sensei Bob Brabham, and Sensei James Corbett.
A gathering later that evening at the Corbett home began with belt and certificate presentations by Sensei Corbett. The crowd enjoyed BBQ and snacks while watching UFC 57.
VMAC Members Earn Black Belt in Kickboxing
Sensei Shaun Gay and Sensei Robert Englemann earned their Black Belts in Kickboxing on Saturday, December 14, 2002, at testing held at the IKF and ISCF endorsed and approved Augusta Martial Arts Academy (AMAA) in Augusta, Georgia. Testing along with them were IKF and ISCF fighter Clint “Wildman” Wiggins, along with Eddie Singleton, and Robin Connelly from AMAA.

Just prior to the test ISCF World Director Mike Carlson was awarded a Rokudan (6th Degree Black Belt) in both Shin Nagare Karate and Shin Shin Jujitsu by Professor Jack Albritten, Judan (10th Degree Black Belt) and President of the Professional Combined Martial Arts Association (PCMA) who was present with his son, Greg Albritten, who holds the rank of 9th Degree Black Belt. The test began with the candidates demonstrating the kata of the Kickboxing system in unison. Next, they demonstrated various kickboxing techniques and combinations as asked by the testing board.

The conditioning phase of the test had the candidates spar a five minute round with 3 fighters simultaneously—against all three in a ring at once! “Precious” Paul Pearman – a PKC National Champion kickboxer, Jack “The Ripper” Nilsson – UFC Veteran, and Sam Smith, all accomplished fighters, and Black Belts who comprised the three who challenged the candidates in the ring to test their resolve. While the one sparring candidate was striving to stick and move, the other four were drilled on combinations, concentration kicking, and callisthenic exercises non-stop for the entire 25 minute session.

Any cessation of combat during the five minute, three-on-one sparring session would have resulted in immediate failure.
Conditioning was immediately followed with individual kata testing and a cognitive portion regarding the history of the martial arts. Following that portion, the testing board adjourned and discussed the candidate’s performance. The board returned shortly and awarded all of the candidates with their Black Belts, which were embroidered with their names and the name of the system.
Michael Scott “Mike” Carlson of AMAA developed the MSC Kickboxing System. The system retains many of the traditional aspects of the martial arts such as kata, belt rankings, and discipline, but it also focuses on modern kickboxing techniques. The techniques used in this system are based on the training methods Carlson has used to produce numerous state and national champion kickboxers.

Sensei James Corbett said regarding the test: “I am overwhelmingly proud of both Sensei Shaun and Sensei Robert. They are the first students I have had to earn the rank of Shodan. They both preformed well on this test and none of us will ever forget that experience. I am so humble that we have these two fine individuals associated with VMAC.”

Members of the testing board included AMAA Black Belts Jack Nilsson, Sam Smith, Paul Pearman and Coley O’Donnell; IKF and ISCF Board member James Corbett of VMAC; and Professors Greg and Jack Albritten of PCMA.
