Another Summer Heat competitor of a decade or so ago will be competing in the UFC in a few weeks. Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson was given the nod as a last minute fill in to replace an injured opponent against Ultimate Fighter competitor Justin Edwards.
Thompson v Edwards will be a preliminary match, but is sure to have fireworks. Steve Fossum, World President of ISCF MMA, says that Thompson sports a combined 57-0 record of amateur kickboxing, professional kickboxing, and professional mma fights. Of this record, an astounding 29 fights have been won by KO.
Thompson fought twice here in the Azalea City, once at the Toombs Street Boys Club and once at the Lowndes Civic Center. These events were primarily kickboxing and held back in the years 1998 and 1999. These were early Summer Heat events which were held when Valdosta Martial Arts Center was in it’s infancy. The latter event featured a title NHB fight were Jonathan Wiezorek won the Southeastern ISCF MMA Pro Heavyweight title.
One of the Summer Heat events at which Thompson competed was a co-sanctioned IKF and PKC event. Summer Heat events later served as the IKF Southeastern Regional Tournament, giving berth to fighters for the IKF National Tournament. Thompson was the main event at his last Valdosta area tournament. Thompson traveled down to this area with his father, Ray Thompson, and other fighters from Upstate Karate in South Carolina.
For more information on Thompson, see the ISCF MMA News page.
